A CASTLE MADE OF SAND
The project presented for Next Generation is a series of raw films made with cell phones by young refugees arriving in Belgium. After passing through Brussels, they were accommodated in centers further away from the capital. While waiting for papers or repatriation, they filmed the small moments of daily life.

WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY
4 young newcomers to the Netherlands recount the impact of involuntary migration during their adolescence. They depict this in an audiovisual journey through social obstacles and personal victories. The collective story shows how important it is to experience opportunities, understanding of language and empathy from others to build their own adult existence in Dutch society.

CECI N’EST PAS UN HYMNE
For this project, students from the Kunsthumaniora Brussel and Collectif Mal Temperado are joining forces. They are making a film entitled Ceci n'est pas un hymne, which focuses on the reworking of the Belgian hymn into a quirky, contemporary version. They see this as a metaphor for thinking about identity, borders and an uncertain future. They want to show the power, influence or inspiration that national hymns have - or no longer have - and ask the question from whence comes this urge to demarcate territory through music. In the film, they perform their own new hymn, reflecting their ideas about today's world and their hopes for tomorrow.

CANDELA
Candela, which means light, candle, or fire in Spanish, is a fictional short film of approximately 20 minutes directed by Mariana Machado. It portrays the relationship between three queer Latin American people who live together and love each other in Brussels. The city becomes the fourth protagonist of the story as we follow their journey for one day in the capital’s streets and encounter the people that they meet along the way. It is a heartfelt portrayal of the relationship between the main characters and their search for belonging in a foreign land.
The storyline stems from the director’s observations of daily life in Brussels, its characters, streets, and sometimes bizarre details. Each character from the main cast carries their individual dreams for the future that are inseparable from their migrant trajectory, forcing them to think and exist between two worlds in a resourceful and creative manner.

INNERESCAPE
During the creation process, young people create inner landscapes in which they reflect on the future. This will result in innerEScape, a poetic, experimental film. InnerEScape is an initiative of the artist collective KNEPH. Young people are searching for their way in turbulent times. Our contemporary lifestyle has far-reaching consequences on the earth, nature, the cosmos and on our own being and living together with others. Our world is in crisis. At the same time, the technological revolution demands reflection and action. Awareness sensitization is needed: how far do we go in using and manipulating resources, people? What choices do we make and how can we guarantee a humane future?
