‘TN - Le Sorelle Macaluso’

This is the story of Gina, Cetty, Maria, Katia, Lia, Pinuccia and Antonella. Seven sisters who meet again at the burial of one of them. Are they dead or alive? Are they women or ghosts? In the end, it doesn't really matter. They cry and remember, come face to face and make up, give comfort and despise each other in the steps of a procession that seems like a family therapy.With its unsaid things and explosions of joy, sobs and buried memories, the collective past that suddenly reappears between a gigantic laugh and shared sorrow.With Le sorelle Macaluso (The Macaluso sisters), Emma Dante, a leading figure of the Italian contemporary stage- already present at the Théâtre National with notably MPalermu, Carnezzeria, Vita mia and Le Pulle -, explores the human soul once again. Life, family, filiation, death. The father figure and the mother figure. The pangs of education. The notion of siblings and mourning.
The memory and its mechanisms - the short, long or emotional memory.Presented in the framework of the European cities on stage project, this play performed in Sicilian and surtitled in French, is presented in the form of a melodrama. With, beyond its dark theme, a series of contrasting paintings through which the living mix with the dead to a background of settling scores, joy, and sometimes frivolity. A creation that can be seen this summer at the Festival d'Avignon.
