Poets on painters

Literary visitors’ guide with Armando, Els Moors, Monika Rinck, Maarten van der Graaff and Peter Verhelst

BOZAR and the Flemish-Dutch House deBuren asked five poets to write poetry inspired by five works from the exhibition Facing the Future. Art in Europe 1945-68. In the literary visitors’ guide But sublime like a cannon they interweave memories of the war with a postwar desire for progress and change. The guide opens with Pain by Armando. On the eve of the 60s this artist and poet wrote the manifesto Credo 1 in which he pleads for an artistic practice that is not 'soft', 'but sublime like a cannon.' You can then read Els Moors, Monika Rinck, Maarten van der Graaff and Peter Verhelst translate the art of Gerhard Richter, Fernand Léger, Erik Bulatov and Max Beckmann into salient poetry.
