In a Strange Land

During her reign, the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England tried to stamp out Catholicism by introducing a repressive regime. Some of the most talented Catholic musicians in England, including Philips, Dering and Dowland, were torn between their desire to obey and their conscience and decided to go into exile. As for those who remained in the country – William Byrd and Robert White, for example, – they expressed their spiritual exile through emotionally powerful music of a surprising intensity. Stile Antico is the perfect ensemble to recreate the characteristic depth and strength of this music, with the “freshness you get from young voices, and an amazing rhythmic vitality” (Daily Telegraph).
