aja monet’s album When the Poems Do What They Do (2023) delves into Black love, joy, and uncertainty, blending jazz, poetry, and prose while echoing the 1990s spoken-word movement. Her upcoming book, Florida Water, is a heartfelt tribute to poetry’s transformative power. Let's discuss about joy and art, poetry and engagement, and get inspired once again.
With your ticket for the Sofa Session, you can visit the exhibition When We See Us at you own pace between 6:30pm and 7:30pm.
How have artists from Africa and its vast diaspora depicted daily life over the past century? Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, and her team have sought to answer this question with a landmark exhibition. Bozar proudly presents this vast kaleidoscope of Black figurative painting from the 1920s to the present day.
In this session with aja monet and Sarah Diedro Jordão, host of the Reclaiming Our Joy podcast, they celebrate Black joy and explore the quest for belonging and healing. Together, they discuss the balance between their roles as artists, lovers, and community organizers, all driven by a shared commitment to joy.
After the discussion, the Afropolitan Festival presents the double bill concert STACE - Kolinga at 8pm in Terarken Hall.
