Salve Regina

It is not often that works combine sublime, interweaving strings with the purity of a voice. Examples do exist, however, as in the works in this concert’s programme, to prove just how successful this combination can be. In his Mozart-style Salve Regina, the young Felix Mendelssohn’s composition is limpid and clear. Created in 1781, Boccherini’s Stabat Mater expressively translates the pain conveyed in the lyrics, a text which has inspired countless musical interpretations. The Auryn Quartett and Katharine Dain do justice to these two pieces thanks to the intimate scale of chamber music. The quartet rounds off the programme with a string interpretation of Die Kunst der Fuge, delicately heightening Bach’s magnificent polyphony.
