‘Halaqat II’

Halaqat, meaning ‘multiple links and circles’ in Arabic, connects artists and cultural actors from Arab and European countries. This project invites reflection on care through a gender lens. During two years, Bozar plays a pivotal roe in advancing this cause on an international and artistic scale through a diverse program of performances, concerts, film screenings, lectures, and debates.

Launched in 2021, Halaqat supports artistic exchanges between the two regions. Now in its second phase, running until spring 2027, it further examines the concept of ‘care.’ This notion is closely tied to gender issues in both regions and addresses questions of gender equity, sensitivity, and power dynamics in an inclusive and intersectional manner. It encompasses a focus on attention and concern for others, as well as the responsibilities of caring, worrying, or looking after, often implying vigilance and accountability.

How can different notions of care be addressed and expressed? How do dominant narratives shape which bodies are cared for (and which are not), and how can these narratives be challenged? How can practices of care be strengthened within the cultural scene and society at large in these two regions of the world?

Until spring 2027, Bozar and the Goethe-Institut invite artists, cultural practitioners, and audiences to explore these questions through artistic and discursive formats taking place in Belgium and Arab countries. You can find the full overview of Halaqat activities at the bottom of this page.

Practical information

Halaqat (2024-2027) is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut. It will run for 32 months until spring 2027 with activities in Belgium, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco. In this second phase, it expands its geographical scope and takes a cross-regional and intra-regional approach, fostering South-South exchange. It also focuses on the notion of locality and the importance of bringing forward the role of art in local communities. The objective is to strengthen artistic voices by supporting co-creation through different grants, residencies, public events, and capacity-building initiatives like workshops and mentorship programmes.
