Oriental fairy tales

Just one concert evening is enough to colour the tales of One Thousand and One Nights with strings and piano accompaniment. Danish composer Christian Frederik Emil Horneman decided to dedicate an entire opera to the figure of Aladdin after the success of his concert overture Fairytale. A century and a half later, Turkish composer-pianist Fazil Say reaches for an ancient Persian saga reminiscent of the fable of the phoenix rising from its ashes. Fazil Say wrote his concerto Anka kuşu full of oriental rhythms especially for Dutch brothers Arthur and Lucas Jussen. They go four-handed through the recent work from 2020. But all fairy tales unfortunately come to an end, Franz Schubert also experienced. His last, Ninth Symphony is a final convulsion of joy and sorrow.
