Not one, but two performances
For Bozar, Charmatz selected two key works from his oeuvre. In Aatt enen tionon from 1996, three dancers do not touch each other and are divided over three levels of a tower. Their movement space is reduced to a small platform. This is followed by an intimate fragment for duo from herses (une lente introduction) from 1997. Boris Charmatz will perform this choreography himself and intertwine with Johanna Elisa Lemke.
Boris Charmatz!
Boris Charmatz (°1973) is not only a dancer and choreographer but also the creator of experimental projects and, since 2022, the director of Tanztheater Wuppertal in Germany. This makes him one of the most important figures in contemporary dance art. At the same time, he participated in memorable pieces as a performer. For those who want to get to know him better, check out his monograph (published by MoMA Dance), including essays on his work and an interview.
For PJ Harvey fans
During Aatt enen tionon, excerpts from PJ Harvey's raw repertoire can be heard. The British musician convinced press and audience in the 1990s with excellent albums like Dry and To Bring You My Love (with monster single Down By The Water). Since then, she has been stripping rock and punk genres down to pure power songs.
At its core: love
Charmatz' two choreographies resonate strongly with the themes present in the expo Love is Louder, from 12 October at Bozar. Love and desire are basic motifs in the two performances. In herses, duo, desire for the other body becomes the driving force behind a sculptural and physical dance. In Aatt enen tionon, the connection between the three dancers is complicated, but they build a relationship through choreography.
Charmatz is right at home
Charmatz is widely known on the international stage and has appeared at Bozar on several occasions. After dazzling group choreographies in 2011 and 2012, he presented Manger in 2015 in which fourteen dancers chew, swallow, taste, spit, vomit, speak, sing, dance... This was followed by 20 Dancers for the XX Century and even more in 2022. The Centre for Fine Arts was occupied for no less than three hours and dancers appeared out of nowhere. With Charmatz, you never know!
