Waël Ali
Under a low sky tells the story of a forty-something Syrian documentary filmmaker named Jamal, who has been living in France for some time. As his friends disperse across the globe and the places of his childhood disappear, he becomes obsessed with the idea of losing his past.
Written and directed by Waël Ali, the piece broaches the painful question of artistic creation in exile. The author addresses this topic by playing on two styles of writing, or two registers, one intimate, the other political. It results in a dialogue between multiple viewpoints and across several timeframes that converge towards one subject: an ever-elusive territory.
Born in 1979, Waël Ali is a Syrian writer and director who studied in Syria and France. His work includes internationally renowned performances such as Je ne m’en souviens plus, presented in Beirut, Carthage, Paris, Berlin and Antwerp, and Titre provisoire, jointly written with Lebanese actress Chrystèle Khodr.
The play is part of the Performances beyond two shores project, which is supported by the European Commission and aims to promote the production, circulation and professionalisation of young artists in Europe.
