The Martyrdom Cycle (30 possibilities to kill a man after Circignani)
The German artist Sebastian Utzni (1981°) has lived and worked in Switzerland since 2004. He has made a series of thirty woodcuts in bright rainbow colours which depict violence in the media and on the internet. For this he drew inspiration from paintings in the Basilica of St. Stephen in the Round on the Celian Hill, in Rome, by the sixteenth century artist Niccolo Circignani, which portray the torture of early Christian martyrs. The similarities between then and now are striking. Latin extracts from the Bible also figure on the Roman paintings, the English titles are contemporary. The work has been hung in the BOZAR rotunda in reference to the Roman basilica. The decision to confront the visitor first with the backs of the works helps conjure up the image of the torture chamber. The bright rainbow colours emphasises the contemporary nature of the piece.
