The Symphonic Dances triptych is the last complete composition that Rachmaninov left to posterity. A work composed like a concerto for orchestra, full of extracts from his previous works and overflowing with lyricism, which is testimony to the great mastery of musical construction that the composer acquired over the years. The prodigious Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin, a work-synthesis that would define the scope of the American musical identity, is also on the programme of this concert, conducted by the energetic Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin who has been musical director of the Rotterdams Philharmonisch since 2008. At the piano, the fascinating Khatia Buniatishvili, whose musicality never fails to do justice to the works she interprets.
