‘Matthias Goerne & Leif Ove Andsnes’

Matthias Goerne and Leif Ove Andsnes conclude their three-day tribute to the composer Franz Schubert with 3 Klavierstücke and Schwanengesang. These songs were not necessarily intended to be a cycle – this was done posthumously. However, what they have in common in all their variety is their bittersweet tone. The universe these songs inhabit is incredibly beautiful, but something is irretrievably lost. “My compositions are created from my knowledge of music and from my pain,” Schubert wrote in his diary in 1824. The texts are permeated with Weltschmerz, raging streams, melancholic nightingales and a setting sun that might never rise again.
