How must Europe respond to the ever larger group of Muslims on the continent? Sociologist Mark Elchardus, for a long time in-house ideologist of the Flemish Socialists (sp.a), believes it can lead to “intense feelings and sometimes violent expressions of alienation on one hand, and to clear and sometimes violent expressions of rejection on the other.” The continuing flow of refugees is making the situation all the more difficult. “If this situation is not quickly managed, it is likely that in many European countries, and with the approval of the vast majority of the population, the borders will close and the right of asylum will be effectively abolished.”
In a counter-reaction, his fellow sociologist Stephen Bouquin described the statements by Elchardus as a “serious aberration”.
Apache TV is inviting the two men to debate the issue. Karl van den Broeck, editor-in-chief at Apache, will be moderating.
The public is welcome to attend recordings.
