From Ear To Here
“To love liberty above all else.” Ludwig van Beethoven wrote this line from Friedrich Schiller’s Don Carlos in his notebook. The liberty sought by Beethoven must be seen in the context of his time, and his exploration is rooted in the philosophy of the Enlightenment.
Our world today continues to seek artistic, political and civic freedom – freedoms taken for granted by some, but fought for by others, through exile, creative power and poetry, like our artistic guest, Kubra Khademi.
Born in 1989, Kubra Khademi is an Afghan performance and visual artist, and feminist who is based in Paris. Through her work, Khademi explores her life as a refugee and a woman. She studied fine arts at Kabul University. She later attended Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan, where she began her public performances. When she returned to Kabul, she continued performing in response to a male-dominated society governed by extreme patriarchal politics. After a public performance titled Armor in 2015, Khademi was forced to flee her home country. She currently lives and works in Paris. In 2016, she was awarded the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture, Audrey Azoulay. She is also a member of the Atelier des Artistes en Exil. In 2019, she was nominated for the Révélations Emerige awards. This year she is completing a long-term artist residency at the Fondation Fiminco.
