‘Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam’

Orchestra in Residence

By bringing together the monumental works of Richard Wagner, Gustav Mahler and Alban Berg, the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest is giving us a programme based around the splendour, but also the limits, of tonal music. It demonstrates how to bring out the most accomplished beauty with several extracts from The Twilight of the Gods, the final part of the Ring and a true expression of Wagnerian romanticism. It goes on to share the fruitful attempts to surpass the rigid and formal framework of music inherited from tradition, with Mahler’s final opus and Berg’s first purely symphonic work that the composer dedicated to his former teacher, Arnold Schönberg. In the course of this journey, the music will totally free itself of the constraints imposed by the canons of tonal music.
