Meredith Monk has always been unique. She writes music, dances, creates performances, and plays the piano. But above all, she is a singer. Rather than singing songs using the lyrics, she plays with the endless possibilities of the voice, and in doing so, she has inspired singers around the world to search for their own sounds.
Zonzo Compagnie made a name for itself with performances inspired by well-known composers such as John Cage, Bach, Miles Davis, and Henry Purcell. Now, a contemporary, female composer has been added to that list – for the first time ever. Once upon a time, Meredith Monk created the Dancing Voices performance for Zonzo Compagnie; now, Zonzo Compagnie has created a performance about her.
Singer Naomi Beeldens, trombonists Nabou Claerhout or Loes Minnebo, pianist Anthe Huybrechts, director Ine Van Baelen, and videographer Stijn Grupping explore Meredith Monk’s voice in Hey Meredith!, an oeuvre spanning nearly 60 years.
A performance by Zonzo Compagnie in co-production with STUK House for Dance, Image, and Sound, and Perpodium. With support from DE SINGEL & the Belgian Federal Government’s tax shelter through Cronos Invest.
