Marjan Poorgholamhossein - Pouppe Theater

This contemporary production is inspired by the centuries-old Persian tradition of Aruasak-baazi and 'aruasak-e posht-e parda or puppet and object theatre. The narrator is an Iranian woman, who fled her homeland as a child, during the war with Iraq. Back in the country of her early childhood she tries to carefully reconstruct the memories which she thought she had forgotten. “Many (Iranian) women will be able to identify with her memories”, says the play’s director Marjan Poorgholamhossein. She chooses to create a distance between the audience and the narrative by inserting her main character in a mini replica of a legendary Tehrani street, much like a puppet. Oddly enough, the distance is completely effaced as soon as the house lights are switched off.
