Ecstasy is probably the most famous film in the history of Czech cinema. Gustav Machatý’s film follows Eva, a young bride living her first passion, not with her elderly husband Emil, but with Adam, a handsome construction engineer. To portray this simple story, Machatý and his cinematographer, Jan Stallich, deployed a wealth of ingenuity and set the intrigue to music by Giuseppe Becce, one of the most talented film composers at the time.
Newly restored by the Czech National Film Archive, the film premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Restored Film.
