Abattoir Fermé

Maja Westerveld wrote, performed and directed Drek, the greatest day in the life of Mevrouw [Madam]. Her Document, a manual for Existence, is about to be presented to great fanfare. “Just my luck,” Mevrouw thinks as she sleeps past her alarm, today of all days. She tries to make up for it but the day, the world, the entire cosmos has gone ahead without her. She watches in sorrow as her place is taken by a slightly slimmer version of herself. With slightly larger breasts. Who is exuberantly enjoying her life.

Drek is a delightful journey, in rich, animated and at times humorous language, which takes in fiascos, bonobos and koalas along the way. Bring on the pink fluffy clouds: Abattoir Fermé has come up with a golden pearl.” – Het Nieuwsblad (22.05.2017)

“The monologue Drek is a comical, dystopian tale (…) that gives you a feeling in the gut that stays with you long afterwards. The character feverishly attempts to get a grip on something that cannot be held. She clings tightly to her survival instincts. This persistence is melancholy and telling. And very beautiful.” – Theaterkrant
