When a friend has seemingly stood him up, creatively blocked filmdirector Seonjun finds himself wandering the streets of the Buckchon district in Seoul. He encounters old friends, actresses and ex-lovers while drinking good amounts of soju along the way resulting in drunken dialogues and romantic endeavours in what seems to be a loop of reconnections. It’s not really clear whether he keeps living through the same event, or that events are completely new to him each time.
The Day He Arrives is a signature Hong Sangsoo as it contains many of the themes and playful narrative puzzles that have shaped Hong's cinematic work before and continue to do so.
For two weeks, Bozar offers an extensive programme consisting of nine films featuring some of Hong Sangsoo's earliest works and a selection of the films he made in his most recent years. Hong Sangsoo first gained attention in 1996 with The Day a Pig Fell into the Well. Over the years, he has earned numerous international awards. Besides being a professor of screenwriting and directing in Seoul, he remains one of the most inventive and prolific filmmakers in contemporary cinema.
