‘Cuban Cinema Posters’

15 June'19
- 18:00

for the 60th anniversary of ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos)

Founded in 1959, two months after the victory of the Cuban revolution, the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) was given the mission to develop an exhibition policy and communication strategy aimed at the cultural education of the Cuban people. The film posters created by the Institute represented the model of graphic design par excellence. Their aesthetic qualities and power of communication meant they were extremely popular and had pride of place on the walls of cinemas, in the street, in offices and were even used to decorate numerous interiors. For the past 60 years, an emblematic group of graphic designers has been collaborating with the ICAIC. Some of them, such as Eduardo Muñoz Bach, Antonio Fernández Reboiro and Antonio Pérez, defined the codes for designing a cultural poster; others, among the new generation, ensure the continuity of this tradition, which fuels the cultural imagination of the Cuban people to this day.
