Our main resident ensemble is pleased to welcome the Taiwanese-Australian virtuoso Ray Chen. Together they will perform Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Violin concerto, the work with which the young Chen won the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Tchaikovsky dedicated the work to his friend Leopold Auer, intending that he should also perform it. Auer refused. He found it unplayable… The orchestra then performs Brahms’ First, a work in which the composer combined various influences with a Beethovenian structure but that also looks to the future. A symphony described by one contemporary as “the most modern in modern music”.
Sonata for Solo Violin, op. 27/4
Violin Concerto, op. 35
Symphony no. 1, op. 68
