Sing odes to joy, because Philippe Herreweghe is bringing the most celebrated symphony in musical history to the stage once again. When, in 1824, Beethoven had choir and soloists perform in his latest symphony, the powdered establishment almost fell from their chairs. Today, this joyous ode to brotherhood has shown its worth. Less revolutionary but no less gripping: Berlioz' Tristia, a musical essay on death and sorrow, based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. To be there or not to be there, that is the question.
