The Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff is unequalled in his ability to write such wonderful broad melodies, as underscored by the three works on the concert playbill. Romanticism personified, his music seems to have been crafted for nostalgic daydreaming. Literally so in the case of the Symphonic Dances, his final composition. Here we witness Rachmaninoff looking back nostalgically on his past. The work is a musical testament, Rachmaninoff’s ultimate effort to evoke his life and career. He achieves this with virtuoso and skilfully concealed references to earlier works. This concert will feature the work in a special version for two pianos. Under the BOZAR spotlight this season with a portrait, Aleksandar Madžar and Alexander Melnikov are the ideal duo for this work.
