‘Yervant Gianikian et Angela Ricci Lucchi’

Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi have won their spurs in contemporary avant-garde cinema and their work is considered a reference. Recurrent themes - totalitarianism, colonialism, World War I, genocide and racism - are revealed in a unique approach towards archive material and found footage. Frames from the source material are magnified, re-framed, hand-coloured etc. Re-editing, decelerating or accelerating the image creates a new “meaning”. The filmmakers developed a device of their own to do this: the camera analitica. No longer ill-disposed towards manipulating historic documents, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi redefined the documentary. Their concept of ‘the archive’ is very peculiar: « What matters to us is to make what we see in archives mean something; our archives are too abstract, apocryphal. It is a collection of updated visions, re-read in the present. (…) For us ethics and aesthetics go hand in hand. Re-filming means giving new meaning. The issue is to reveal the historical ideology present in public and private material, to reveal the power of images, without using words, without comment and entirely devoid of didactics. We bring forgotten images back to the present and force people to reflect and to discover the connections between past and present.”

Does the sight of the horrors of war rouse our conscience, as Leonardo da Vinci claimed when he shouted “Oh! Uomo!”, or does it paralyse us instead?
