‘As African filmmakers studying in Belgium, we are taught Western cinema. I’ve had to deconstruct this to find my own cinema, because the way cinema is made in the West is not my way of doing cinema. It’s not the same reality. If I take the Western approach to making movies, I will destroy the singularity of the story that I want to film. I have to find, each time, the right way of filming the situation, story, or subject at hand.’ – Rosine Mbakam.
In this intimate discussion, Rosine explores her cinematic journey on a deeper level, sharing insights into the way she dismantles the Western gaze to shape her authentic cinematic perspective. She reflects on the challenges and triumphs of navigating the film industry as a black female filmmaker in a predominantly male-dominated Western context. Rosine shares her unique experiences as a director, producer and educator, drawing from her work in both Belgium and Cameroon.
The workshop is moderated and organized by Lyse Ishimwe (Recognition asbl).
