For this edition of Walk With Me, based on Kapwani Kiwanga's Rootwork, we will be talking about Art Nouveau and its relationship with the Belgian colonial economy, and in particular the creation of the Banque d'Outremer, set up on 7 January 1899 under the name “Compagnie Internationale pour le Commerce et l'Industrie”.
ayoh kré Duchâtelet is a Belgian-Ivorian artist who lives and works in Brussels. He conducts documentary research into situations from colonial and contemporary history. His research gives rise to heterogeneous fictional assemblages combining text, images, video and sound. His work examines the visual regimes of coloniality and the relationship between political emancipation and the liberation of the imaginary.
