Choeur accentus & Insula Orchestra - Laurence Equilbey

The 1821 premiere of Carl Maria von Weber’s Freischütz (“The Marksman”) was an unprecedented musical event in Germany. For the first time ever, a German composer had created a real national romantic opera, drawing on his homeland’s poetic and musical folklore. The opera tells the story of a hunter who sells his soul to the devil, or the struggle between good and evil, between darkness and light. Der Freischütz thus heralded a new German operatic tradition, which would reveal its full potential a few years later, when Richard Wagner broke onto the scene.
