in the presence of the director

In the presence of the director Stéphane Batut and Jacques Kermabon general secretary of the association Jean Vigo Prize.

Juste wanders the streets of Paris looking for people only he can see. He collects their last memory before helping them into the afterlife. One day Agathe, a young woman, recognizes him. She belongs to his previous life. She is alive and he is a ghost. How will they manage to love each other and seize this second chance?

Burning Ghost  unfolds its plot with unfailing poetic grace. The film is neither a full romantic tragi-comedy nor entirely a genre film, a peculiarity that makes it terribly endearing.” These are the glowing terms used by Première magazine to describe this film by Stéphane Batut, a compelling work that we are presenting together with the Jean Vigo Award, won by the director in 2019.

Since 1951, the Jean Vigo Award has been given to directors who have demonstrated independence of spirit and originality. Over the years, it has gone to many talented directors who have made their mark on the history of cinema, including Alain Resnais, Alain Jessua, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Yves Robert, Robert Enrico, Christian de Chalonge, Maurice Pialat, Olivier Assayas, Pascal Bonitzer, Jean-Charles Tacchella, and Arnaud Desplechin. It was only fair to add Stéphane Batut to this distinguished list.
