‘Those who sing go from joy to the melody, those who listen from the melody to joy.’ This quote from the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore could have been the motto of Véronique Gens’s singing. She is at home both in opera and in the concert and lieder repertoire. With her own superb timbre and her exceptional voice in between soprano and mezzo, she has for a long time dominated the baroque stage, while also excelling in performances of the major Mozart roles, as well as of the Classical and Romantic repertoires and even the moderns. Gens is also one of the greatest ambassadors of French mélodie (art song) a repertoire that she presents with verve in recitals all over the world. This programme is a marvellous tribute to the wealth of French mélodie.
