With Unmuted, Bozar shines the spotlight on a dance performance with a powerful message, inspired by the urban dance born in Jamaica in the 1970s, the Dancehall. Created by young Afro-Belgian dancers who carefully developed it through a programme of residencies and workshops organised by MDF-The label, it addresses a string of current issues, including the influence of representations, the weight of the past and the silence under which it has long been buried. Led by Massinda Zinga, Sisterhood brings together multidisciplinary artists, professional and amateur, who, through this work on African heritage in Dancehall, wish to break free from the weight of silencing by working to challenge, the unique and stereotyped image imposed on black women, and to fight against stereotyped images of Africa and the Caribbean. The performance will be preceded by a meeting with the artists.
Created in 2016 by Massinda Zinga, MDF-The label is an association that aims to bridge the gap between those involved in the Afro-Caribbean dance movements of Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Its objective is to support access to the source, in order to improve cultural and technical knowledge, and to promote these dances and cultures to avoid their appropriation and the impoverishment of cultures.
The choreographer & artistic director of the show, Massinda Zinga, is an artivist, dance and cultural educator. She works in the field of African heritage in Afro-Caribbean cultures.
