‘Une Des Mille Collines - Bernard Bellefroid’

They did not know that it was a crime to be born a Tutsi in Rwanda, the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’. The lives of Fiacre, Fidéline and Olivier came to an end in 1994. The last days of these children are intertwined in three phases: the memory of the genocide, the Gacaca trials of 2005 and the resilience of the village, where those who took part in the genocide and those who lost loved ones are once again living together. The film, shortlisted in the Magritte category for Best Documentary, tries to approach a truth, to restore their existence and the story of one hill as well as that of all other hills.

Bernard Bellefroid is a Belgian screenwriter and director. In 2003, his documentary film Rwanda, les collines parlent, produced by the Dardenne brothers, won the Grand Prix at the Vues d'Afrique Festival, the Bayard d'Or at the FIFF Namur and the Grand Prix for Documentary at the Docville in Leuven. In 2009, his first feature film, La Régate, won the Prix du Public at the Festival Premiers Plans d'Angers, as well as the Prix du Jury Junior and the Prix du Public at the Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Raissa Mbilo with the director and Félicité Lyamukuru, former president of Ibuka.
