‘UFA Film Nights, with Jeff Mills DJ Set’

25 Sept.'15

Berlin, Symphonie einer Großstadt (1929)

Berlin, the Symphony of a Great City is an apogee of the ‘city symphony’ or city documentary, the jazz age’s most typical non-fiction genre. The film presents a musically structured cross-section of life in a modern metropolis, with intervals of time, social differences and geometrical patterns, all compressed into a compelling visual experience. It was to become one of the most influential films of the silent era. The music in this film is by Jeff Mills, one of the world’s most brilliant DJs. His artistic universe is not just restricted to clubs. Mills is fascinated by science-fiction and has provided several futuristic classics with a soundtrack.

Jeff Mills

Jeff Mills is one of the world’s most talented DJs and producers, a top talent from the illustrious Detroit techno scene. You can recognise him from his stark, almost industrial sound. His artistic universe is not just restricted to clubs. In recent years he has regularly worked with visual artists, choreographers and even classical orchestras. This year he is artist in residence in the Louvre, where he is responsible for four shows with music, film and dance. A fascination with science fiction and futuristic thoughts is at the origin of his work. The same fascination pushes him towards utopic film classics from the early 20th century. In 2000 he gave Fritz Lang’s Metropolis a musical makeover. Now he is taking on Berlin, Die Sinfonie der Groβstadt, a musical cross-section of life in a modern capital.
