‘TN - Le Roi Lear’

Dec.'15

Olivier Py (France)

King Lear is a dark and gloomy, warlike and tempestuous play where different characters (Lear the patriarch, his favourite daughter, his faithful Earl of Kent, the treacherous Goneril …) offer us an impudently topical story.  It does so while exploring the underlying themes of the omnipotence of technology, human beings’ ordinary madness, the father’s role, the vices and virtues of language, the quest for power, loss of faith …

This adaptation by Olivier Py is a modern-world prophesy. A cult text brought to the stage by a committed author (from the war in former Yugoslavia to alter-globalisation, from unregistered aliens to the Syrian resistance) who runs his artistic and political eyes over that heap of ruins imagined by Shakespeare and finds the beginning of reconstruction.
