“Sometimes I work like a musician. I make variations, a series of works distinguished only by the displacement of a form.” — Antoni Tàpies
The nocturnes are back at Bozar! The one on Thursday, 28 September ’23, is all about pioneering artist Antoni Tàpies. Expect a diverse evening programme before or after your visit to the retrospective exhibition The Practice of Art, which immerses you in his artistic lifestyle.
Films by Pere Portabella
Besides creating monumental works, Tàpies also found his way into cinema through film producer Pere Portabella in the late 1960s. The latter, in turn, sometimes worked with a poet friend rather than a trusted screenwriter, which was groundbreaking at the time. Interestingly, you will discover works by Tàpies instead of excerpts from the film on Portabella’s film posters. Moreover, you can see Tàpies at work as an actor in Nocturno 29. We are projecting two films in the newly restored exhibition rooms on rue Royale (the so-called Antechambers that are once again open after the fire).
Musical landscapes
Tàpies sees his oeuvre as movements, silences, and contrasts in a classical music composition. To understand his artworks, in addition to the specific ‘sound’, you can also pay attention to the resonance of other artworks, both his own and those of other artists. The Catalan Pau Codina also paints ‘landscapes’, so to speak, but with his cello – a musical tribute to her compatriot.
This evening will be accompanied by two DJ-sets: Islas and Clara!
