Ballet Festival 2017

For almost nineteen years, Maria Aleksandrova has been a shining star of the Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow, lending her immense talents to an extraordinary repertoire, from Don Quixote to Giselle, La Bayardère and of course Swan Lake.

Joining the Bolshoi school aged just nine and scooping gold medal at the international ballet competition in Moscow in 1997, she joined the company of the Bolshoi Theatre immediately, studying under the direction of Tatiana Golikova, Nikolai Fadeyechev and Boris Eifman, performing short solos where her abilities really shone through.

Highly acclaimed for her athletic abilities and charisma inherited from the tradition of the Bolshoi Ballet, she has been selected for several major roles, most notably Jeanne from Flames of Paris in 2008, Swanilda in Coppélia and Esmeralda in the eponymous ballet in 2009.

She has also toured extensively with the company on all of their international tours to France, the UK and as far afield as the USA.

She was invited to the Paris Opera as principal artist to perform the lead role of Raymonda in December 2008. The quality of her technique2 (especially her saltations) and her fiery temperament make her the ideal performer3 for character ballets, such as Don Quixote. The Ballet of the National Opera House of Covent Garden also hailed her a triumph in La Bayardère.

In February 2017, at the height of her career, she decided to leave the “Great” Theatre of Moscow (The Bolshoi) behind and travel the world, appearing wherever and whenever she chooses.

So we are exceptionally honoured to welcome Maria to Belgium for eight spectacular performances!
