Lecture by Bijoy Jain

Bijoy Jain (1965) worked for Richard Meier in Los Angeles before returning to India in 1995. In 2005, he founded Studio Mumbai, a studio made up of architects, engineers, carpenters and masons who have all been trained in traditional building techniques. In a metropolis like Mumbai, Bijoy Jain has developed an atypical attitude to the project: his work is slow, inclusive and pays enormous attention to detail, using scale models rather than plans, within a firm or on site, in a collective rather than as a project manager. He is against widespread destruction, rapidly built, poor quality constructions, the division of labour and the alienation of users and designers.
