Serbian director Emir Kusturica (1954) twice won the Palme d’Or for portraying the modern history of Serbia. Integrating poignant humour with stirring social critique of the political turbulence surrounding his homeland, his films stimulate and provoke the minds of their viewers. Underground is a tragicomic allegory for the history of his native Yugoslavia from the Nazi invasion of World War II up to the disintegration of the unified country in the bloodshed and genocide of the Balkan wars.
