El Mutakallimun (Masters of the World) is the title of the sixth album by Souad Massi, one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the Arabic world. She pairs her impossibly beautiful voice and rich musical repertoire with a strong commitment (she was forced to leave her home country of Algeria in 1999, following threats). El Mutakallimun is an ode to the revolutionary contemporary Arabic poets and the golden generation of poets from Al-Andalus, and at the same time a plea for freedom and protest. Live she forms a trio with the legendary percussionist Rabah Khalfa and the young guitarist Mehdi Dalil in which the joy of playing, the complicity and the generosity are clear for all to see.
