Goethe-Institut Brüssel

‘Social Criticism and Abstract Experiments: A Bauhaus Film Night’

2 Dec.'19
- 19:00

A hundred years ago in Weimar the Bauhaus was founded and so began the history of what is probably Germany's most famous art school. On the occasion of its jubilee, the Goethe-Institut Brussels and BOZAR will be screening a selection of films that originated in Bauhaus circles, thereby highlighting a little known aspect of the Bauhaus. Film curator and Bauhaus expert Thomas Tode will be providing an introduction to each film.

The Bauhaus wanted to remove the traditional divide between figurative, applied and performing arts by adopting an interdisciplinary approach. This overlapping of the different arts was seen as an impetus for innovation. As part of this philosophy it was primarily the three Bauhaus masters  – Walter Gropius, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy and Oskar Schlemmer – who made a number of films and light projections. The films can be divided into three thematic categories: reformist architecture films, documentary reports offering social criticism and abstract film experiments.

“Painting, photography, film and light projections can no longer be jealously separated the one from the other"
– Lászlo Moholy-Nagy
