In the Gulf of California, poaching threatens the vaquita, the world's smallest harbour porpoise, which is on the verge of extinction. To save it and bring those responsible for the disaster to justice, a team of leading scientists, environmental advocates, investigative journalists and Mexican naval agents are willing to risk their lives. The documentary does not only tell the story of an ecological fight but also shows the connections between local authorities, drug cartels and Chinese mafia.
Sea of Shadows was selected in the World Cinema Documentary Competition section at the 2019 edition of the Sundance Film Festival.
Richard Ladkani is an award-winning Austrian director and cinematographer. He has completed over fifty documentaries for renowned international networks such as the BBC and National Geographic. In 2015 he founded Malaika Pictures, producing films that raise awareness of worldwide issues.
