Closing Brussels Art Film Festival (BAFF)
The French television program Jazz Portrait featured some big names, including the virtuoso pianist Thelonious Monk in 1969. He gave a forlorn impression and seemed to have lost his tongue. With Rewind and Play, Alain Gomis unravels the programme 40 years after it was performed. He gives us a new perspective: that of the musician. The director reworks more than two hours of uncovered rushes to reveal the symbolic violence that must have been a media exercise for a black artist in 1970s France. Monk has to wait, he is interrupted, he is presented with questions that have nothing to do with his music... But once he sits down at the piano, the artist can finally express himself freely and liberate himself from the stereotypes in which people try to confine him.
