Jay returns to his old neighbourhood of Washington DC and discovers how gentrified it has become. African-American residents are being forced out of their homes by wealthier, predominantly white homeowners. Treated as a stranger by his former friends, Jay is lost and doesn't quite know which world he belongs in.
Merawi Gerima is a filmmaker from Washington DC. Residue, his first feature film, is the fruit of a collective effort, resulting from the full involvement of the people from the neighbourhood whose portrait he paints. Gerima is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts within the University of Southern California. He is the son of famous Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima, a legendary figure in LA. Rebellion is a film movement led by a generation of young African and African-American filmmakers who, in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, advocated black cinema that offered an alternative to the Hollywood mainstream.
