In Piraeus of the 1950s, the world of brothels close to the port becomes the mirror of a society ravaged by post-war poverty and cold war tensions.
Women, Greek or immigrant, and the men around them, unite and clash in the torment of passion, pain and loneliness.
The end of an era approaches when the State decides to close down brothels: will these lost souls be crushed, saved or sentenced to another form of prison?

The Greek Theatre Society of Luxembourg, member of the Cultural Circle of the European Institutions, presents in Greek the play "Red Lanterns" (Kokkina Fanaria) by Alekos Galanos, directed by Yannis Gavras, following three performances in June 2018 in Luxembourg.
The Red Lanterns’ merciless glimmer transcends time, exposing the emotionally broken Male and Female, trapped in co-dependent relationships of convenience.
The film with the same title, based on the play, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1964. It was also entered into the 1964 Cannes Film Festival.
