This performance by the Diotima Quartet transports us to Central Europe, particularly to the Czech Republic. Aside from a Belgian creation by Miroslav Srnka, one of the Czech Republic's greatest contemporary composers, the ensemble will be performing a moving almost cinematographic work, by Leoš Janáček. The composer drew inspiration for his String Quartet no. 1 from Leo Tolstoy's novel The Kreutzer Sonata, which in turn was inspired by Beethoven's symphony of the same name. Diotima closes the programme with Franz Schubert's final string quartet, a monumental piece of great depth and symphonic overtones.
