Taking the train... An everyday action, a change of scenery, an escape. When Steve Reich was young, the train was the incredible journey he regularly made between New York and Los Angeles, accompanied by his governess while the Second World War raged across the Atlantic. Half a century later, the composer wonders which train would have carried him – a Jewish child – had he lived in Europe. Different Trains brings the strings of the quartet into dialogue with the voices of those who experienced the Shoah. Four musicians and a tape recording will perform one of the key works of the second half of the 20th century. In addition, the Quatuor Danel performs Shostakovich's Third String Quartet, an energetic work that he composed just after the war and which was censored by the Soviet regime.
