Bozar Next Generation

French music magazine Diapason has praised the all-female quartet, Quatuor Akilone, for the fervour, sensuality and lovely sense of colour in their sound. With their phenomenal interpretations the four Parisians also impressed the juries of the eighth Concours international de quatuor à cordes in Bordeaux and the Prix ProQuartet. For this morning concert, they have chosen two string quartets by two Viennese composers, Mozart and Berg. In Alban Berg’s String Quartet, op. 3, you hear the composer attempt to break free from tonality, while still firmly rooted in the great Viennese tradition, as was his predecessor Mozart. Berg’s string quartet is a perfect match for Mozart’s ‘Dissonance’ Quartet, which was well ahead of its time and in which the composer experimented with unresolved and dissonant harmonies.
