In the presence of Elie Seonnet & Flora Coquerel
Wax in the City speaks about how wax has become the “popular emblem” of a new African and Afropolitan generation which has arisen from the métissage, or mixing, of Africa and the West, as they come up with versions of the fabric which are better suited to our day and age. Filmed between Europe and Africa, “Wax in the City” provides us with an overview of this fabric and its impressive history. The film manages to go beyond the unique prism of fashion to raise more political issues like cultural appropriation and innovation when faced with the respect of traditions. It is also interested in the economic dimension of a sector, which, up until now, has not been particularly beneficial to the Africans.
After the screening there will be a discussion on how to strengthen African and Afrodescendant fashion on the international market; with Flora Coquerel (Miss France 2014), Elie Seonnet (director), Anne Grosfilley (textile specialist), Siré Kaba & Valia Ndelela (NAW asbl). The discussion will be moderated by Chayet Chenin (Nothing but the Wax).
This event is organized by NAW asbl, in partnership with Afropolitan Festival.
