The fruit of many years of work and numerous reworkings, Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony is a monumental fresco often regarded as the crowning achievement of the romantic symphony. Dedicated to Emperor Franz-Joseph, its creation, in 1898, was a huge triumph, and a success that Bruckner rarely experienced in his lifetime. In Anglo-Saxon countries it is sometimes nicknamed “The Apocalyptic” by virtue of its sustained energy.
